![]() Adult Orthodontics in the 21st Century: Managing Orthodontic
Treatment for Patients with Periodontal Problems
Instructor: Vince Kokich, D.D.S., M.S.D. (Visiting from
Tacoma, Washington)
Dates: May 14-15, 2009
Course Description
Most orthodontic patients have an "intact" dentition and a healthy periodontium. As a result, orthodontists are often complacent and overlook the importance of a periodontal examination. After all, children and adolescents are generally not susceptible to periodontal bone loss, so why tale the time to assess the periodontium? However, if this complacent attitude is used to treat adult orthodontic patients, the periodontal health could be compromised. Interproximal cratering, furcation defects, hemiseptal defects, two and three-wall defects, and isolated and generalized advanced attachment loss can be improved substantially during orthodontic treatment, if the clinician recognizes the problem and institutes the appropriate tooth movement. Pre-existing soft tissue defects can also compromise the appearance of the teeth and must be treated at the correct time and in the proper manner. Since most orthodontists now treat between 20 and 40% adults, and since orthodontists generally do not keep up on recent advances in periodontal therapy, it is important to occasionally review the current philosophy regarding the management of the periodontal patient. This is especially true for the adult patient who will require single-tooth implants or implant anchorage to facilitate orthodontic treatment. In these cases, special steps, including diagnostic wax-ups, are often necessary to determine the appropriate treatment plan. Dr. Kokich has had the opportunity to evaluate and treat many complicated adult cases with underlying periodontal problems. He has taught courses on this topic to both graduate students and practicing clinicians around the world. This two-day course will use many clinicians examples to provide valuable information regarding the treatment options for various common periodontal problems found in adult orthodontic patients.
