Composite Artistry: Mastering Anterior Restoration
Instructor: Newton Fahl, Jr., D.D.S., M.S. (Visiting from Curitiba, Brazil)

 March 23-26, 2009

Course Description

Although conservative composite restorations can frequently be performed on same-day appointments, ultimate esthetic and functional results often require effective treatment planning that lead to predictable restorative strategies. Case selection and a thorough comprehension of nature's role modeling are essential to achieve a combination of longevity and beauty.

This course will focus on introducing a philosophy of how to conservatively, effectively and artistically perform aesthetic direct anterior composite restorations. Aspects related to the diagnosis, treatment planning and execution of such restorations will be thoroughly addressed. A step-by-step procedural approach to solving day-to-day anterior direct restorative challenges will be presented. Dr. Fahl's in-depth lecture will provide new insight in direct composite resin restorations and discuss elaborate techniques and improved materials that provide long-lasting, life-like results. He will share how to bring composite restorations to an art form by emulating proper form, color and function in a systematic and pleasurable way.

The necessary armamentarium, from instruments to restorative materials, for the predictable and stress-free realization of such restorations will be introduced. Dr. Fahl will teach how to treat a complex anterior case with Composite Artistry through a hands-on experience that comprises the realization of seamless IV restorations, direct veneers, diastema closure, peg lateral build-ups, and rotated teeth. A practical discussion of smile design concepts to the esthetic and functional rehabilitation of the anterior dentition with direct composite restorations will be presented. Minor multi-disciplinary approaches to enhance anterior direct restorative procedures will be introduced. This course will also thoroughly cover finishing and polishing techniques according to a systematic protocol that allows the achievement of nature-emulating contours and textures.

Learning Objectives:

  • Discuss conservative treatment alternatives to anterior ceramic restorations.
  • Teach the polychromatic layering technique to artistically mimic the natural dentition.
  • Introduce and discuss several aesthetic composite restorative systems and their multi-faceted utilization in direct composite procedures.
  • Present interdisciplinary approaches and form-function treatment planning for enhancing anterior aesthetics with composite resins.
  • Discuss finishing and polishing techniques for achieving proper anatomy, function and an enamel-like appearance.
  • Present the rationale for enhancing operative effectiveness and practice income through direct composite procedures.
