Adult Orthodontics in the 21st Century: Adult Orthodontic Finishing. What Every Clinician Should Know
Instructor: Vince Kokich, D.D.S., M.S.D. (Visiting from Tacoma, Washington)

Course Description

After performing orthodontic treatment for a few years, most practitioners recognize that orthodontics is not easy as simply placing "pre-adjusted" brackets and inserting nickel-titanium archwires. Eventually, proper alignment and ideal occlusion interdigitation must be achieved. Although some cases literally "fall into place", many patients require "a lot of effort" and "a lot of knowledge" to finish the occlusion. This is especially true for the adult orthodontic patient with underlining periodontal and restorative problems. What should the orthodontists use as a checklist for finishing in order to establish proper occlusion? How does one modify finishing for the adult orthodontic patient who has an unusual treatment plan? What is acceptable and unacceptable in the final result? How does the orthodontist know when to remove the orthodontic appliances in the multidisciplinary adult patient? These are questions that commonly arise in the mind of the clinician who is striving to establish his or her reputation as a "quality" orthodontist. During this in depth two-day course, Dr. Kokich will share his knowledge and experience in orthodontic finishing for the adult patient. As a practitioner who limits his practice to complicated adult cases, Dr. Kokich has had the opportunity to evaluate and treat many multidisciplinary cases. In addition, he has taught courses on orthodontic finishing to both graduate students and practicing clinicians. This course will be a great opportunity to learn many of the pearls about "orthodontic finishing" for the adult orthodontic patients. Special emphasis will be directed at formulating realistic rather that idealistic objectives for adult treatment, establishing the correct occlusal scheme in different situations, and determining the appropriate esthetic parameters for the orthodontic patient with restorative needs.
