Why Sato Orthodontics for the General Practitioner?

It is obvious that with new dental techniques and materials, we are able to perform truly minimally-invasive dentistry. Under this aspect Orthodontics stands out as another important technique to provide minimally invasive treatment for our patients. Rather than changing tooth position through extensive restorative work, the correct position and angulation should be achieved through orthodontic treatment. As in the past, where hygiene and periodontics became inseparable connected with restorative dentistry, today, orthodontics has become another cornerstone for the comprehensive, interdisciplinary active dentist.

Why Sato Orthodontics for the Orthodontic Specialist?

Traditional orthodontics and also traditional dentistry is treating teeth as if they would be independent units, only related to each other. This approach works in some cases. In many other cases, challenges occur already during treatment or shortly after the treatment is finished. On average, 5 – 10 years after orthodontic treatment many cases relapse. Patients start to observe tooth migration, to feel interferences, bites are opening or patients experience symptoms like TMJ or muscle disorders, headaches, migraine or many dental problems. These findings are reactions due to the lack of adaption of the masticatory system.

What is different in the “Sato” concept compared to any other orthodontic concept in the world?

Early in his career, Prof. Sato faced his own orthodontic failures and relapses through long-term observation of his patients. This made him realize that another approach in orthodontics is necessary to achieve predictable longevity and triggered significant research.

Today, Prof. Sato’s approach takes into consideration not only tooth movement – function, but also the adaptation capacity of the mandible and the joints. Despite the presence of numerous esthetic techniques, this concept is based on solid functional principles. The principle of mandibular adaption, which occurs naturally in human growth, can be applied in orthodontic therapy. Based on functional diagnostics and treatment planning, his concept obtains stable results through etiological therapy rather than structural or symptomatic treatment.

Therefore, the “Sato” concept can achieve orthodontic treatment results, which cannot be achieved with other orthodontic concepts

The 3 year orthodontic program is the most exciting part of my training on this concept. Once you receive and digest the information about this treatment approach the 3 year ortho program clears up all the dust and the amount of information we get is mind blowing and extremely exciting.

Orthodontics as just esthetic treatment is a lost battle
There is clear evidence that esthetic problems are functional problems, not just structural dental problems- e.g. anterior crowding has its underlying cause in a posterior problem. Therefore functional diagnoses and treatment planning are mandatory in order to achieve predictable and long-term stable outcomes.

Orthodontics is the most powerful technique in dentistry
With orthodontics, you can achieve improvements in the functional, esthetic, and physical condition of your patients, which cannot be archived with any other dental treatment, at least no so easily and not so atraumatic.

Orthodontics is the foundation of dental treatment
In the 1970’s the entire dental community accepted periodontics as a necessary foundation in dentistry. Today in modern dentistry of minimally invasive atraumatic treatment, orthodontics became another foundation of dental treatment. Based on solid diagnostics, orthodontic treatment should precede extensive restorative or implant treatment

Orthodontics is 100% occlusion treatment
Orthodontics is always full mouth rehabilitation.
Orthodontics is a complex intervention of the masticatory system and the entire human body. Therefore the craniomandibular system, occlusion and function must be understood.

Orthodontics which can achieve results which cannot be achieved with conventional orthodontic concepts
Orthodontics, which avoids orthognathic surgery and premolar extractions in even severe cases
Orthodontics, which does not need more then 3 month retention and is stable for life
Orthodontics, which keeps patients in good function or is able to treat predictably dysfunctional patients

Therefore, the “Sato” concept can achieve orthodontic treatment results, which cannot be achieved with other orthodontic concepts, like:

  • Treatment avoiding orthognathic-surgery
  • Treatment avoiding premolar-extractions
  • Treatment of: severe class II, III malocclusion  /  open bite cases, esp. class III open bites  /  mandibular deviation  /  severe crowding
  • Treatment of dysfunctional patients
  • Orthodontics with simple mechanics
  • Complex cases treated in short-treatment-times (1.5 – 2y)
  • Orthodontics which is stable and only needs 3 month retention phase
  • Treatment which achieves stable function and excellent esthetics
